Vincent Willem van Gogh, 1853-1890, was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter who had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art, died aged 37 from a gunshot wound self-inflicted. Many of best-known van Gogh paintings such as Sunflowers were completed during the last two years of his life. The artist was seen as one of the greatest and most recognizable painters in history.
