Johan Vermeer, 1632-1675, a Dutch painter, is now acknowledged as one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age. Vermeer paintings specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle-class life. He was particularly renowned for his masterly treatment and use of light in artwork. Only three Johannes Vermeer oil paintings are dated: The Procuress (1656; Gemäldegalerie, Dresden); The Astronomer (1668; Musée du Louvre, Paris); and The Geographer (1669; Städelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt). Vermeer's admirers included Salvador Dalí. Young Woman Seated At The Virginals, 9.8 by 7.9 inch, was sold for an auction record of £16.2-million pounds (€24.29 million) at the Sotheby's sale in 2004. -- Read Vermeer's biography >>
