Thomas Cowperthwait Eakins, 1844-1916, was an American realist painter, one of the most important artists in American art history. He painted several hundred oil portraits, and a number of large paintings of other subject matters. In 1902 he was made a National Academician. Eakins was honored with a memorial retrospective at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and in 1917-18 the Pennsylvania Academy followed suit.
