Giuseppe Ribera, 1591-1652, was a Spanish Tenebrist painter, and a leading oil painter of the Spanish school. His mythologic works are as violent as his martyrdoms in Apollo and Marsyas, with versions in Brussels and Naples, or the Tityos in the Prado. He painted the horror art and reality of human cruelty and showed he valued truth over idealism. The rehabilitation of his international reputation was aided by exhibitions in Princeton in 1973, of Jusepe de Ribera paintings in London at the Royal Academy in 1982 and in New York at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1992. -- The Copyright of Scripts is Reserved by Toperfect.
