George Wesley Bellows, 1882-1925, was an American realist painter, known for his bold depictions of urban life in New York City. The White House acquired his 1919 oil painting Three Children. The Whitney Museum of American Art published a biography of Bellows as part of the American Artists Series. In 1999, Polo Crowd, a 1910 painting, sold for U.S.$27.5 million to billionaire Bill Gates.
