Impact of Social Environment on Contemporary Paintings |
|
Not only has the social environment changed based off of contemporary paintings, but paintings and entire movements were created based on current social environments. The two are linked together in time, and each one is just as impactful as the other in a long-term tug of war. If you want to get to the root of it, you can clearly say that the social environment had a bigger impact on contemporary paintings than the other way around. But dismissing the important questions that contemporary paintings raised when speaking out was not allowed, well that would be a huge injustice to the many brave artists of the past. So what are some of the ways to describe how the two are bound together?
World War II and Tachism in the 1950’sWorld War II had huge impacts on multiple cultures and countries. During the 1940’s and more so in the 1950’s Tachism can be grouped in with the many postwar movements that was due to public fatigue from the war.One of the better known leaders is Alfred Otto Wolfgang Schulze, creator of the 1947 classic ‘It's All Over The City’. His more daring ‘Yellow Composition’ is a very important piece in the Tachism movement, giving a really big nudge to contemporary paintings of its time. Jean-Paul Riopelle was a Canadian phenomenon at the time when he created several ‘Untitled’ works. In both 1948 and 1951 he created some of the best oil on canvas creations for the movement, many of them finding a way into world known collectors private stores. With roots in both America and France, Jean Philippe Arthur Dubuffet brought with him an understanding of both cultures and a unique outlook. But what also makes this artist special is that he produced contemporary paintings related to Tachism long after the movement was over with. This can be seen in his 1962 ‘Court les rues’ which features many similar features to his older paintings during that period. Tachism was all about freedom and was a worldwide movement, probably the biggest of its type that had contemporary status. Nouveau Réalisme and Its Competition with Abstract PaintingPossibly the most contentious movement and one that was a perfect parallel to the way society was still parted in the 1960’s, Nouveau Réalisme was founded by both Yves Klein and Pierre Restany. It was in direct opposition to Abstract painting, and some would say it mirrored the battles of the clash of classes in society with the vigor of its work. There were a lot of controversies with its many contemporary paintings, with some of the popular ones being ‘Travailleurs Communistes’ by Raymond Hains. The painting itself is very logical in its appearance and does very little to hide the emotion behind its creation. But it is ‘IKB 191’ by Yves Klein that really hit the spot of what this movement was about. It was one of the group’s biggest hits, and secrets in technique and overall quality can still be discovered by savvy collectors if they push hard enough. Although some described the finish contemporary painting as pretentious, there is a lot more to uncover when you take his full collective of work into study. In a fascinating move, the very idea that brought the group together is what ended up dissolving it later on. It was a perfect summary of how society was handling its current differences and the course of action it took. Contemporary Feminist Art of the 1970’sNo movement had a clearer focus than the Feminist Art movement that was born from feminism taking place in both the 1960’s and 1970’s. The social impact of women fighting for their rights would end up suffocating all media, and in some places where women couldn’t speak out, the use of art was the perfect outlet.Judy Chicago had the loudest impact with her contemporary painting ‘The Dinner Party’, creating a dialogue between women and the rest of the world challenging the fact that notable women of history were not recognized as significant. It was a collaborative work that used the air of volunteers, and also functions as a colorful, hard to complete, and overall innovative piece of work. Her contemporary paintings continued and even included some religious undertones with the ambitious series ‘The Birth Project’. Childbirth was the main point in this series, while the ‘Powerplay’ series focused more on comparing the power of men to women. Is Postmodern Art Born From Contemporary Art?Very much so, and in fact all art in some way comes from contemporary art. Contemporary art is the here and now, so in that sense it is always relevant. Here are some notable contemporary art paintings and what they represent;Mark Tobey and ‘Canticle’ from 1954 is a painting that mimics the thought process of many people during that war torn time. A calligraphic piece that doesn’t have an identity, it represents society and exactly what they don’t want to be seen as. In the ‘Woman’ series of contemporary paintings ‘Woman V’ was a particular gem by Willem de Kooning, depicting a cross between a present day woman, one of the past, and possibly one of the future. This mashup is seen with a variety of off balance colors, all of which form a single entity that is hard to take your eyes away from. Richard Pousette-Dart managed to turn mere pictures into words for those determined enough to decipher it with ‘Symphony No. 1, The Transcendental’. Created in the early 1940’s, if you follow the illustrations from start to finish you can make out a very important story about human choice and the aftermath. The meaning may change person to person, but it still rings true today that this is one of the most fascinating contemporary paintings ever created. SummaryOne of the many roots to art is contemporary paintings, since they are heavily influenced by society and what’s taking place. The two can never escape one another, as they are creator and creation, of a society that continues to sort through its issues dating as far back as the beginning of time. |
