The marine artist Hermanus Koekkoek Senior was the youngest, and most famous during his own lifetime, of the four artist brothers that founded the Koekkoek dynasty of Netherlandish painters. Hermanus Koekkoek Senior trained under his father Jan Hermann Koekkoek in Middleburg, moving to Amsterdam, where Hermanus Koekkoek Snr became a member of the Royal Academy in 1840. In 1876, Hermanus Koekkoek Snr appears to have been living in London, exhibiting a painting at the Royal Academy entitled "A Fresh Breeze on the French Coast" and giving his address as 16 Charlotte Street. | |||||||
