Hermanus Koekkoek Snr, 1815-1882, was from a family of highly influential Dutch artists. He became famous for oil painting in the Dutch Romantic style, mainly river landscapes
and marine subjects. In 1875 he gained a gold medal at the Arti et Amicitiae. Even during his lifetime the best Hermanus Koekkoek Snr paintings were exhibited and collected in the United Kingdom.
