In Islam, Jesus (commonly transliterated as Isa) is considered one of God's important prophets. In Islam, Jesus is a bringer of scripture, but not the victim of crucifixion. Judaism rejects the belief that Jesus was the awaited Messiah, arguing that he did not fulfill the Messianic prophecies in the Tanakh.

The Nativity of Jesus painting has been a major subject of Christian art since the 4th century. The artistic depictions of the Nativity or birth of Jesus, celebrated at Christmas, are based on the narratives in the Bible, in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, and further elaborated by written, oral and artistic tradition. Christian art includes a great many representations of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child. Such Jesus paintings are generally referred in Madonna painting or "Virgin and Child". They are not usually representations of the Nativity specifically, but are often devotional paintings of Jesus Christ representing a particular aspect or attribute of the Virgin Mary, or Jesus. Nativity paintings Jesus Christ, on the other hand, are specifically illustrative, and include many narrative details; they are a normal component of the sequences illustrating both the Life of Christ and the Life of the Virgin.

Stories Depicted in Paintings of Jesus |

The many stories of Jesus can take a while to go through, but there are many of his more famous accounts that have been painted. A lot of these Christian paintings over the years was commissioned by higher Holy authorities, but there are also a lot that were done by creative artists that had a story to tell.
CrucifixionThe most widely known event in biblical history is none other than Jesus Christ hanging on the cross. It has become so widespread that many have a hard time thinking of a cross without thinking of Jesus. A full length movie was made about his Jesus painting, and there are several pieces of Christian art dedicated to what he went through while hanging by nails.Jacques-Louis David created the painting Christ on the Cross in 1782 for the Brissac family chapel in Paris. David was not particularly religious and does not have a lot of Christian paintings to his name, but this one stuck out greatly among the community. In the painting Jesus is on the cross with his hands nailed shoulder length while his feet are nailed together. The crown of thorns he wears sends a slight trickle of blood down the right side of his chest. The amount of blood in the Jesus painting is very subtle, but is slight enough to where it can be noticed. First time viewers will also notice that this is at the beginning of his crucifixion, and not near the middle or the end. His is made apparent by showing the fresh blood not only going down his chest, but on his nailed left hand. Claiming to be the son of God, Jesus was looked at by many to be a leader. This threatened the very balance of power in all of the realms, leading to his unjust trial and eventual death by crucifixion. It's said that he willingly went in order to cleanse the world of its sins. So in essence, he died to save humanity. The interesting portion of the Christian art mentioned above is that Jesus is looking upwards, probably to God. He infamously said near his end on the cross "God, why have you forsaken me?" Other known paintings of Jesus on the cross is Crucifixion of Christ by Heinrich Bloch, and The Crucifiction With Sis Jerome And Christopher by Christian Pinturicchio, Crucifixion by Picasso and by Dali. The Last SupperLeonardo da Vinci has had quite a few paintings featuring Jesus, and The Last Supper is not only one of his more famous mural paintings but one of the more famous biblical stories. It is possibly the most heavily scrutinized Jesus paintings in history due to its many restoration failures. It is one of those paintings that everyone loves, and no matter what no one will be completely happy with. There are strict guidelines to seeing it in its current restored form, and visitors have to book ahead and can only stay a certain amount of minutes.Looking at the Last Supper from its original meaning, it was the meal that Jesus had with his Apostles, right before his eventual crucifixion. This was an important meal before he went to Jerusalem, as he predicted in truth that one of his Apostles would deny his existence. This prophecy turned out to be true, and it was indeed Peter that denied any knowledge of Jesus, thus leading to the ultimate betrayal. There were many traditions born from this meal in faith that are widely carried out today. Leonardo's depiction of this Christian art covers a lot of that story, including the eventual dread that happened thereafter. His apostles are all gathered around him at a large table with a giant feast. Jesus sits in the middle, seemingly in his own world. With all of the busy people around Jesus it looks as though he is reflecting. On the left side of the Jesus painting it looks as if they are arguing about his judgment. Closer to his left there seems to be genuine concern with his current state. But on the right it is as if everyone is partying and gallivanting about. There is even a lone woman on the right side that seems to be having a conversation with one of the apostles. If you look at it like this, on the left are his most faithful friends and on the right are the betrayers. Other paintings of Jesus that depict the last supper are The Last Supper Without Judas and The Last Supper of Jesus by Andre Derain. Baptism of JesusGiovanni Bellini really did his homework with Baptism of Christ, a very color narrative of a Jesus painting that tells several stories in one. There are few areas of this Christian artwork that don't have something vital going on, from the John the Baptist dumping the water on Jesus and cleansing him to the ladies on his right looking on in amazement. Jesus is holding his body notably, and even though not naked, the way he has his hands shows just how bare his soul is at the moment. Looking down on all of them is God, and in the Jesus painting the sky is just as detailed as what is happening on the ground.Jesus's Baptism along with his crucifixion are two of the biggest things to happen to Jesus that defines faith. During the baptism it is mentioned that heaven split apart and a dove descended on Jesus. The dove is better known as the Holy Spirit, and in the Jesus painting it explains why God is looking down on him. So it can be said that since the women in the portrait are still looking at Jesus when it happens, that only he and John the Baptist were of rightful birth to witness the Holy Spirit. The Baptism of Jesus paintings are also known as Baptism of Christ by Domenico Ghirlandaio and The Baptism of Christ by Leonardo da Vinci. SummaryThis is just touching the surface of the many paintings that were made about Jesus. There continues to be a lasting interest in immortalizing Jesus in paint, and all with an incredible focus and detail to the canvas. These are great Christian art that come from a great source of information. |
