Biography of MatisseThree artists are responsible for significant developments in painting and sculpture in the opening decades of the 20th century, they are artist Henri Matisse, Picasso and Marcel Duchamp. Before 1920s Matiss was labelled a wild beast or Fauvist, but later was regarded as an upholder of the classical tradition in French art and a leading figure in modern art. Henry Matisse started to paint in 1889 sharing same story with Jack Vettriano, he had illness of appendicitis, his mother brought him art supplies. Matisse discovered that art is "a kind of paradise" and decided to become an artist. 5 pieces of Matisse art were exhibited in a salon in 1896, the state purchased two of them. In 1951 Matisse finished the interior of Chapelle by designing the glass windows and the decorations, later was called as the Matisse Chapel, it took him four years. Matisse gallery was established by the artist himself in 1952, named as Matisse Museum in Le Cateau, now it is the third-largest collection of Matisse works in France. Henri Matisse died of a heart attack in 1954 and is interred in the cemetery of the Monastère Notre Dame de Cimiez. |
