Biography of Eugenio ZampighiItalian Realist artistborn 1859 - died 1944 Eugenio Zampighi was born in Modena, Italy on 17th October 1859. Eugenio Zampighi showed a keen interest in art when he was very young and at the age of thirteen Eugenio Zampighi attended the Academy of Design. Zampighi completed the course winning six first class medals in the examinations. |

At the age of twenty, Zampighi won a
scholarship and spent three years in Rome.
Eugenio Zampighi was very successful in the yearly
examinations and Eugenio Zampighi was invited to become an
Honorable Member of the Modena Academy.
Eugenio Zampighi spent the last year of his scholarship in
Florence and Eugenio Zampighi decided to settle there in
1884. It was here that Zampighi began to
paint his well known genre subjects. These
were readily sold and Eugenio Zampighi received many commissions from local
dealers and from abroad. Taking inspiration from a poem buy Leopardi, Zampighi executed a large painting that was exhibited in the hall of the Modena Academy. It was a great success and the Council of the Academy conferred upon him the degree of Professor. |

Eugenio Zampighi then devoted himself to figure
painting, depicting scenes of the domestic
life of his countrymen. These paintings are
very pleasing compositions with lively
coloring and are his best known paintings. They
are highly sought after today by collectors
in Italy and abroad and they were equally
popular during the artist’s own lifetime.
