Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida
(1863 - 1923), Spanish painter, was born in
Valencia, and received his art education
first in his native town and under F
Pradilla, and then in Italy and Paris. |
Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida is represented at the
Berlin National Gallery, at the Venice and
Madrid Museums, and in many private
collections in Europe and America,
especially in Buenos Aires. Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida painted portraits of King Alphonso
and Queen Victoria Eugénie of Spain, and a
magnificent portrait group of the family of
Don Aurelian de Beruete. Three of Joaquín Sorolla
paintings were shown in London at the
Spanish Exhibition, Guildhall, 1901. The painter began to study painting at the age of fifteen in his native Valencia, Spain. At the age of eighteen, Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida went to Madrid, where he copied Old Master paintings in the Museo del Prado. Four years later, Sorolla won a grant to study painting in Rome; there Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida developed a distinct ability for depicting the effects of light. |

Contributing to his international fame, the Hispanic Society of America commissioned him to paint decorative scenes for its library in New York City in 1911. J. Paul Getty purchased ten of his Impressionist beach scenes at auction in 1933. Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida later explained, "One could hardly imagine greater contrasts than those between a Van Goyen and a Sorolla--but, as I say, I bought what I liked." Sorolla's widow left a large collection of Joaquín Sorolla paintings to the people of Spain. The collection is now a museum, the Museo Sorolla, in the artist's house in Madrid. | ||||||
