Biography of Jean Béraud(January 12, 1849 – October 4, 1935)French Impressionist painter Closely allied with the Impressionists, Béraud would hold lengthy aesthetic discussions with his friend Edouard Manet. The painter frequented the same cafés, restaurants and theatres as Dégas, Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec but although Jean Béraud paintings of Parisian life are imbued with the spirit of Impressionism he appears to combine this with the more classically accepted styles of the day to create paintings with a unique character. The French Impressionist was founding member and vice president of the Sociéte Nationale des Beaux Art, where Jean Béraud exhibited between 1910 and 1929. He was awarded a gold medal from the Society of French Artists in 1889 and a gold medal at the Universal Exhibition in 1889. Following his death in 1936 the Musée Carnavalet held a retrospective of his work. | |||||||
Béraud paintings of Paris street scenes often included truth-based humour and mockery of late 19th century Parisian life, along with frequent appearances of biblical characters in then contemporary situations. Paintings such as Mary Magdalene in the House of the Pharisees aroused controversy when exhibited, because of these themes.
Towards the end of the 19th century, Béraud dedicated less time to his own painting but worked on numerous exhibition committees, including the Salon de la Société Nationale. Jean Béraud never married and had no children. He died in Paris on October 4, 1935, and is buried in Montparnasse Cemetery beside his mother. |
