Kharlamov - painter,
predominantly portrait painter, was borne in
1842 in Saratov, twelve year olds Russia oil painting artist Алексей Алексеевич Харламов began

academician. Since 1872 Russia oil painting painter Алексей Алексеевич
Харламов is the member of
the comradeship of the mobile artistic
exhibitions, on which appear his new paintings
almost yearly. The specialty x. compose
portraits, graceful female and children's
heads and simple scenes from the life of
children. By the nature of its painting,
picturesque and juicy, it somewhat resembles
its Parisian leader, Bonn. As to its most
widely known paintings it is possible the
portraits I.S. of Turgenev (in the Russian
museum of emperor Aleksandr III in Saint
Petersburg), YE.A. of three-year-old's (in
The tret'yakovskoy gallery, in Moscow), M.N.
Galkina-Vrasskogo (in The radishchevskom
museum in Saratov) and to the pictures:
"Italian" (in the heir D.P. of Botkin, in
Moscow), "female head" (in sovereign empress
Mary fedorovny ) and the "head of boy
-qygana" (in the museum of emperor Aleksandr
III).
Among the Parisian environment of Aleksey
Petrovich Bogolyubov frequently is
encountered the name of the artist of
Kharlamov, Aleksey Alekseyevich, Alexej
Alexejewitsch Charlamoff, Alexei Alexeivich
Alexei Alexeivichvich Harlamoff kharlamov.
Itself Bogolyubov repeatedly speaks about it
in the "notes of seaman- artist" and in his
letters. Is mentioned the name Of
kharlamova, also, in connection with close
familiar A.P. of Bogolyubov in Paris - I.S.
by Turgenev, husbands Viardo and by others.
A.P. Bogolyubov communicated into the
meeting of museum to the name Of radishcheva
the number of the paintings of this master. Now
in the museum are stored two fabrics of the
brush Of kharlamova - "Mordvinian girl"
(1872, in the left lower angle the
signature: "a. kharlamov 1872", post, in
1895 from A.P. Bogolyubov, who acquired it
not later than 1874 (1)) and "Italian with
the tambourine" (ok. 1883 (2); post, in 1885
from A.P. Bogolyubov, to whom it was brought
into the gift by the author specially for
the museum in 1884. (3)), and also its five
graphic paintings. Before the revolution into
museum collection entered still several
works of this artist, but in the different
time they left from the museum. (4) with the
life Of kharlamov it enjoyed success. The
attention of contemporaries drew its
portraits Of p. viardo (ok. 1874), OF E.A.
of three-year-old's (1875), OF I.S. of
Turgenev (1875), OF A.F. of Onegin (Otto)
(1877) and other, and also numerous "heads"
and close to them genre compositions.
However, this master more lately proved to
be almost forgotten. At present life and
creation Of kharlamova little are
investigated, and in the literature (5),
where its name is mentioned, it is numerous
inaccuracies and "white spots". In
connection with this it is interesting to
open and to refine some dates and events of
its biography. In the literature two dates
of the generation of this master are
encountered: 1840 and 1842. However, Saratov
is called the place of generation. To refine
these information helped the form Of
kharlamova, filled with it for the St.
Petersburg academy of fine art. This is
what artist himself speaks about his
generation: "was borne in the village Of
d'yachevki of the Saratov province of
Petrovskiy of district from the Saratov
petty bourgeois of Aleksey Grigoryev
Kharlamova and his legal wife of Ekaterina
yevgrafovoy in 1840 of October of 20 days"
(6). However, in the metric book of the
church of this village (7) are contained
somewhat different information. Is there
indicated, that Aleksey Grigoryev was not
petty bourgeois, but by the yard person of
Anna sergeyevny's podporuchitsy Kireyevoy,
and that its son Aleksey was borne on 18
October, 1840, but on 20 October it was
perfected the rite of baptism (8). The
question, when the parents of future artist
send into the petty-bourgeois class as long
as it remains obscure. (9) v to the same

considered the 1852, then 1854. To solve
this question it helped the application Of
kharlamova into the administration of
academy of 15 October, 1857, where it
reports that it entered "into the academy in
1854 into the original classes" (12). It is
also known on the academic period of the
creation Of kharlamova that the artist in
the years of studies obtained all assumed
rewards (13), including in 1868 large gold
medal for the fabric the "return of prodigal
son" (14), and in 1869 Алексей
Алексеевич Харламов left abroad as the
pensioner of academy. The last money
document, signed by artist in the academy,
made it possible to refine the time of its
departure. Probably, this occurred in the
summer of 1869, since this assignation Of
kharlamov it signs on 12 June of the same

of artist. To explain some facts, which are
concerned its biography of this time, helped
a number of the academic documents, which
are stored in the Russian state historical
archive. After being in the beginning of his
pensionerskoy trip in Germany (16),

during April 1870 from Paris (18). Artist

From Brussels Kharlamov to the short period

trip in one of the letters to the
conference- secretary of academy P.F.
Iseyevu: "before the departure into the
eider I visited London, where at this time
rich exhibition was comprised of the
particular galleries, the pictures of old
artists. But into this short stay it cannot
be actually become acquainted with entire
wealth of London galleries "(21). Repeatedly
in the literature discussion centered on the
fact that in the Hague Kharlamov it copied
for the museum of academy the "anatomy of
doctor tul'p" Of rembrandta (before the
revolution this copy it were stored in the
picture gallery of academy). However, are
indicated the different years of the painting on
the copy - the 1870, then 1872. The report
P.F. Of iseyeva of 10 November, 1870. (22)
and its letter To kharlamovu of 27 November
of the same year (23) helped to establish
that the copy for the academic museum was
ordered by the comrade of the President of
academy great prince by Vladimir
aleksandrovichem; in the summer of 1870. In
turn, Kharlamov reports Iseyevu in the
letter of 1 May, 1871, that "copy from the
picture Of rembrandta" anatomy "find in the
work from March of month" (24). About the
end of the painting Of kharlamov also it reports
to the same P.F. - To iseyevu on 20
September (on 2 October) 1872: the "obtained
order of copy from the picture Of
rembrandta" anatomy "by its emperor majesty
by great prince by Vladimir
aleksandrovichem, by me is completed" (25).
From the "anatomy" artist preliminarily
makes large figure. Let us pause at this in
more detail. In the letter to P.F. To
iseyevu during August 1871 Of kharlamov it
reports: "concerning the copy I had an honor
to inform you Your Excellency, that I intend
toward the end of May to finish as far as
possible accurate figure and which was
actually by me completed, but it by itself
to me seemed by sufficiently interesting and
moreover so much cost labor, which was
pitifully according to this figure begin to
work by paints, then I used somewhat more
than time and it completely finished, i.e.,
it shaded and tried to transmit by coal
coloring and for its manner... so 4 already
from his figure by means of the tracing
paper it drew on other fabric..." (26).
Before the revolution into the meeting of
museum the name Of radishcheva entered the
copy Of kharlamova from the "anatomy" Of
rembrandta. It is possible that this there
was that figure itself. In any case, in the
old inventory it is recorded, that the copy
is performed on the linen by Italian pencil
(27). At the end of the painting on the copy in
the fall of 1872 the artist again leaves to
France (28). In the literature frequently it
is mentioned, that in Paris Kharlamov became
the student of known then master l. bonna
(29), who played the decisive role in the
making of a Xarlamova- painter. Probably,
this occurred already after the return of
artist from Belgium. In any case, the name
of Bonn in the academic documents of the
first period of a stay Of kharlamova in
France (1868-1870) is not encountered. The
references about it appear only since 1873
(30). In one of the documents (protocol?)
The council of academy of 31 December, 1875,
it is indicated that Bonn, most learned in
its time in Spain, recommends Kharlamovu to
go into Madrid for copying by one of the
works Of velaskesa (31). Order for this copy
by means A.P. Bogolyubov artist also obtains
from academy (32). In the letter to the
unknown of 2 May, 1874, A.P. Bogolyubov
reports that this trip was planned on June
of the same year (33). However, apparently,
it did not take place because Kharlamov was
caused to Ems write the portrait of
Aleksandr II (34). In the literature it is
frequently indicated that in 1874 Of
kharlamov it participated in the academic
exhibition in Petersburg and was obtained
the title of academician for the shown there
works. Among the paintings, for which it
obtained this title, is called "Mordvinian
girl". In the list of the painting of artist,
which were exposed on this exhibition, is
indicated that the title to academician
kharlamov was appropriated during April 1874
for the paintings "Italian girl with the
colors", "Girl- seamstress" and "portrait
engraver pozhalostina" (35). But, judging by
everything, on this exhibition there was
"Mordvinian girl" - as about the painting, which
was on this exhibition, speaks in one of his
letters A.P. Bogolyubov (36). However, in
the number of paintings, for which Kharlamov
Алексей Алексеевич Харламов became academician, it was not named (it can
be because it was shown on the world
exhibition in Vienna (37)). Academic
documents made it possible to establish that
into Russia the artist returns at the end
1875 - the beginning of 1876 (38). After
some time Алексей Алексеевич Харламов again leaves to France, where
the large part of its life is carried out.
This repeatedly was discussed in the
literature, and this is confirmed by its
addresses, which regularly were published in
the catalogs of the exhibitions of the
comradeship of mobile artistic exhibitions,
by term of which it was I only rarely Of
kharlamov it arrived into Russia. On one of
such arrivals speaks nedatirovannaya note
(39). A question about the time and the
place for death of artist remains open. In
the literature it is most frequently
indicated 1922 as the date of its death.
However, the place for death they are called
first Paris, then Saratov. The fact that
Saratov in 1922 was the place for death Of
kharlamova, is not confirmed by documentary
data. In the provincial archive of ZAGS -
Civil Registry Office Saratov the books with
the records about death in 1922 were
preserved completely, but his name there is
not mentioned. But the information, which
confirm, that Kharlamov it died in 1922 in
Paris, to the author of this publication was
unknown.
