Nicolas Poussin, 1594-1665, was the leading painter of the classical and the French Baroque style. Most of Poussin art were history paintings of religious or mythological subjects with a large landscape element. Themes of tragedy and death were prevalent in Nicolas Poussin paintings. In his early works the landscape usually formed a graceful background for a group of figures. The artist was important in the development of landscape oil painting, was imitated by his contemporaries, and influenced other French artists.
