Jules Adolphe Aimé Louis Breton, 1827-1906, was a French Realist painter whose paintings depicting the French countryside. His poetic renderings of single peasant female figures in a landscape, who posed against the setting sun, remained very popular. He was one of the best known painters of his period in France, England, and US. He was made commander of the Legion of Honor, and foreign member of the Royal Academy of London.
