Through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, flower painting was mainly used as an adjunct to Christian religious subjects.
This was particularly true in the paintings by famous flower artists in Northern Europe, whose fascination with highly detailed optical realism and
disguised symbolism led them to lavish great attention on the meanings of various props and settings within their flower art overall
message. Flower painters such as Jan van Eyck often used art nouveau flower elements as part of an
iconographic program so dense that scholars to this day are still debating the possible symbolic significance of each painting of flower such as rose and sunflower. opportunity to produce the religious art and flower paintings oil which had long been their staple (the images of religious subjects
were forbidden in the Dutch Reformed Protestant Church), the continuing Northern tradition of detailed realism and hidden flower drawings appealed to the growing
Dutch middle classes, who were replacing Church and State as the principal patrons of art in the Netherlands. Here you'll find cheap flower paintings in oil. Especially popular in this period were vanitas paintings, in which sumptuous arrangements of fruit and flower art paintings, or lavish banquet tables with fine silver and crystal, were accompanied by symbolic reminders of life's impermanence. Often some of the luscious fruits and flower painting art themselves would be shown starting to spoil or fade. The popularity of flower painting art on canvas, and of still life generally, soon spread from Holland to Flanders, Spain, and France. The French aristocracy of the 18th century also employed flower art gallery to execute on canvas of bounteous and extravagant flowers artwork, this time without the moralistic vanitas message of their Dutch predecessors. |
The Rococo love of artifice led to a rise in appreciation for trompe l'oeil (French: "fool the eye") painting, a type of
flower art pictures on manufacturers, in which objects are shown life-sized, against a flat background, in an attempt to create the
illusion of real three dimensional objects in the viewer's space. With the rise of the European Academies, flower art began to fall from favor. In the Academic system, the highest form of flower painting consisted of images of historical, Biblical or mythological significance, with garden subjects relegated to the very lowest order of artistic recognition. A Story of Flower Paintings: Power of Daisy |
|
Fairies are the great legends spoken about in various forms, but not matter which form they have one thing in common; visual beauty and live in floral land. Whether good or evil, faeries possess a distinctive look about them that is expanded by their magical features. Whether it is the sparkles from their wings or their tiny nature, there is a lot of stuff from legend to speak about when you combine fairies in their natural habitat with flowers. Here an interesting story about fairies living in paintings of flowers. In a small town out east there was this village that couldn’t grow any flowers. The soil was perfect, it rained weekly, but for some reason flowers refused to grow. This led to the small town looking very bland and colorless, an attribute that scared away a lot of would be tourist. One day a traveling painter happened upon the small village and tried to sell his wares. It was an easy sell to the colorless small village, since they hadn’t seen such vibrant colors before in their entire lives. The traveling painter sold out within the hour, much to the dismay of the excited villagers. Due to his massive success, he decided to stay in the village for a while and paint. The townspeople welcomed him with open arms, and he soon walked around the town looking for inspiration to paint more. Unfortunately the colorless small village didn’t have much inspiration in that particular area. The artist asked around about why no flowers grew in the area and was shocked to learn that it just wasn’t possible. He found it hard to believe that both the older and younger generations had never seen as much as a rose in their entire lives. The traveling painter got to thinking and decided that if the town couldn’t grow flowers then he would bring them to the people in another way; by painting them. Luckily his hometown that he grew up in had plenty of flowers, so it was only a matter of using his imagination and getting to work. He took his time painting flowers. Using every bit of his memory of his hometown to paint the most beautiful flower paintings that anyone has ever seen. After he finished all of his work, an entire month had passed. It was an incredible amount of work that he got done with in that time, but he was out of supplies. Before he could hit the road again to go on a supply run, several villagers bought every single flower painting he had finished. The traveling painter laughed and promised the villagers that he would be back in a few weeks after he replenished his supplies. For the time being every home in the village had a painting of one of his flowers. The villagers looked on in wonderment as it was the prettiest thing they had ever seen in their lives. People would go to each other’s homes and compare their flower paintings with another neighbors, and it became a big thing to debate who had the most colorful paintings of flowers. Over time the villagers waiting for the traveling painter to return, but he never did. Finally word got back to them that he had committed to marriage and starting a family, and had since retired from service. The villagers were sad, but at least they had his previous works-or so they thought. Much like the land the small village was on robbed them of having real flowers and color, the flower paintings in everyone’s home began to fade in color. Some villagers were so distraught that they wrapped their oil painting flowers in protective coating, but it still didn’t stop the color from fading from the flower paintings. Soon every single flower painting in the village was rendered to a black and white painting, and there was nothing that could be done. The villagers were sad that their once color village was now the same dull place it had always been. Not only did the paintings represent their individuality, but they brought life to an otherwise boring small village. All of the villagers took their flower paintings down and put them in storage. But there was one small child that still saw the beauty in the painting, even without it having color. The child’s mother insisted on keeping the painting up since it made her daughter happy. One night while they were sleeping, her daughter yelled out for her mother to come to the living room and look at the flower painting. Startled, her mother stumbled out into the living room and was shocked to see that the flower painting was in full color-but there was something different about it. Not only was it in full color, but it was vibrant and shining, so bright that the neighbors could see the shining colors from their house. In the painting there was something new, a small tiny sprite with wings and a crown. Could it be a fairy? Thinking of this as just a one-time coincidence, the village largely ignored it until the next night when the very same thing happened to another villager! The once black and white flower painting was bursting with color, and this time the small sprite was on the left side of the painting, as if adding in finishing touches. As beautiful as the flower paintings were the first time around, each painting that the fairy touched gained something extra special that made it different from the others. These personal touches brought tears to the eyes of the villagers, who began seeing even more color in their homes than they had seen in their entire lives. It was a miracle that they had never witnessed before, and everyone was being involved. Every night the same occurrence happened, with the small fairy colorizing a black and white flower painting in another villager’s home. It became so common that the villagers named the fairy after the traveling painter’s favorite flower. And what was that flower? A Daisy of course! |
