Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze (1816 – 1868) was a German painter of American history and was best known for his 1851 painting Washington Crossing the Delaware, which ranks among the American national iconography. He is associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting, a member of the National Academy of Design, and of the Union League Club of New York.
Leutze finished a first version of Washington Crossing the Delaware in 1850, but it was damaged by fire in his studio. On September 5, 1942, it was destroyed in a bombing raid by the Allied forces.
In 2018, oil painting on canvas by Emanuel Leutze, INDIANS ATTACKING A WAGON TRAIN, was sold for 4,815,000 USD on Sotheby's auction of AMERICAN ART in NEW YORK.
