John Constable, 1776-1837, an English Romantic painter, was known principally for his landscape art. Constable paintings are now among the most popular and valuable in British art. Constable's watercolours were also remarkably free for their time: Stonehenge, 1835, with its double rainbow, is often considered to be one of the greatest watercolours ever painted. Constable art inspired not only contemporaries like Delacroix, but the Barbizon School, and the French impressionists. -- Read Constable's biography >>
