Jan van Eyck, 1390-1441, was a Flemish painter and one of the most significant Northern Renaissance artists. Van Eyck painted both secular and religious art, including commissioned portraits, donor portraits, and both large and portable altarpieces. Van Eyck oil paintings came from the Gothic style, but he soon eclipsed it, in part through a greater emphasis on naturalism and realism. Only about 25 Jan van Eyck paintings survived are confidently attributed to him and considered major examples of Early Flemish painting. -- Read van Eyck's biography >>
