Jan Havickszoon Steen, 1626-1679, was a genre painter of the Dutch Golden Age. It is often suggested that Jan Steen paintings are the realistic portrayal of Dutch 17th-century life. Many of Jan Steen art bear references to the Old Dutch proverbs or literature, historical, mythological and religious scenes, portraits, still lifes and natural scenes. His oil painting portraits of children are famous. Jan Steen is also well known for his mastery of light and attention to detail.
