Gerrit van Honthorst, 1590-1656, was a Dutch Golden Age painter, a leading portrait painter in Netherlands. England Queen Elizabeth of Bohemia employed him as a drawing-master for her children. The most attractive Gerard van Honthorst paintings are those artworks depicting tavern scenes with musicians, gamblers and people eating. He had great skill at chiaroscuro, often painting scenes illuminated by a single candle.
